About Matthew Poon

Piano

M.Mus., 2011
B.Mus., 2008
A.R.C.T. 2002

Matthew Poon is an accomplished piano player with several years of education and experience. Born and raised in Canada, he started learning piano at the age of 4 and after a brief attempt at the violin, decided that was not his musical path. His education at the Conservatory of Music encouraged him to think about his future and the role music played in it and studying under teachers such as Ingrid Henderson, Dr. Robin Wood, and Cary Chow only further supported his decision to become a concert pianist.

His decision to further his education in music brought him to The University of Victoria, where he received his Bachelors in Piano Performance in 2008 under the tutelage of Professor Bruce Vogt. Matthew took a brief break for year to immerse in the musical world of Victoria and from this, realized how deep his passion for music ran. Entering into the University of Ottawa, he will complete his Masters in Piano Performance in 2011, under the guidance of Professor Stephane Lemelin.

Matthew is a young pianist, but has over 19 years of piano experience as well as over 9 years of teaching experience in piano, music history and music theory. He is an accomplished player as a soloist and also as a collaborative artist with a variety of instruments and voices. Groups he has played with include The Victoria Newcombe Singers, The Victoria Summer Club and The Victoria Chinese Alliance Church English Choir. Because of his extended knowledge of repertoire in many fields, he is in constant demand as a soloist and collaborative artist.

Although music has a very significant role in his life, Matthew is also very physically active. When not arranging music for the Victoria Chinese Alliance Church Choir, he enjoys cycling, gardening, volleyball, hiking and geocaching.

Currently, Matthew works with ChoirKids, a non-profit project spearheaded by the Arbutus Singers, and enjoys bringing choral music to schools across Victoria. He also works with Dr. Marvin Regier at Glenlyon Norfolk School, where he accompanies the middle school and high school choirs

I’ve always loved performing; you get a chance to discover new music and learn more about the intricacies and language of a composer’s style, not to mention the fads and fashions of composition during his or her lifetime.   But there’s something magical with premiering a newly composed piece of music by a living composer, and I had the wonderful opportunity to interview composer Benton Roark on VAMSO’s upcoming performance of his work A Stitch in Time.

Here’s what I learned.Continue Reading
