February 22, 8: p.m.
Chan Shun Concert Hall (6265 Crescent Rd.)
THIS WEDNESDAY! That’s right! In a few short days Dianne Reeves will be performing at the Chan Shun Concert Hall and you should be there. But you probably want some details about who she is and what she will be performing so follow me to the next paragraph!
Dianne Reeves is one of the greatest jazz vocalists alive today, having under her title five Grammy Awards for her albums Beautiful Life (2014), Good Night, And Good Luck (2005), Little Moonlight (2003), Calling: Celebrating Sarah Vaughan (2001), and In the Moment: Live in Concert (2000). Since her album Welcome to my Love was released in 1982, Reeves has over a dozen albums to her name and continues to create new songs. Hailed as a master of lyric interpretation, Reeves is also an amazing scat singer. Her talent and love for music has brought her together with many greats of the music world, both inside and outside of jazz. She has toured with Harry Belafonte, Eduardo del Barrio and Sergio Mendes, all who aided her in her exploration and mastery of Latin American music. Her long long lists of recordings have placed her beside many different symphony orchestras, most notably Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz.
Born in Detroit, Michigan, and raised in Denver, Colorado, Reeves grew up surrounded by music. Her father was a vocalist, her mother played the trumpet, her uncle is famous bassist Charles Burrell, and her late cousin George Duke pioneered many jazz and popular genres. She was encouraged at a young age to love and embrace music and studied with Clark Terry and Phil Moore.
According to her website, Reeves has been touring since July of 2015 (this being the latest date present on her website!)! You might think, wow she’s going to be super tired, but I’d like to think of it another way; with so many performances already past, Vancouver audiences will get a performance that will be well polished, real, and fresh! You will see Reeves at her most comfortable and most warm.
On the program for the evening, Reeves will be performing songs from her latest album Beautiful Life, as well as favourites from her other recordings, plus some brand new works! She will be joined by Peter Martin (piano), Romero Lubambo (guitar), Reginald Veal (bass), and Terreon Gully (drums).
