January 13-15, 2017
Queen Elizabeth Theatre (600 Block Hamilton St)
STOMP! Honestly do I need to write an article about this? Probably one of the biggest shows ever in my time on this planet, STOMP is coming to the Queen Elizabeth Theatre to perform four shows from January 13-15! I swear every time I get asked to write an article about something amazing happening in Vancouver I want to move there more and more!
But more details because that’s why you’re here!
For those of you who may not know about STOMP, it is a performance combining different forms of percussion, movement and visual comedy. What makes them unique is the use of everyday and industrial objects that are transformed into percussive instruments. These ‘instruments’ in turn are paired with dancing, body percussion and story. Yes, there is story. But no words. Everyone on stage communicates with one another through rhythm and dance!
I believe the most noted image or experience when describing STOMP is the sweeping orchestra, a group of performers who use stiff-bristle brooms in synchronized movements and rhythms. Other creative instruments include eight Zippo lighters, utilizing the sound of their caps opening and closing and – of course – fire. Pretty much everything that is not a conventional percussive instrument you will find at STOMP.
Created by Luke Cresswell and Steve McNicholas, STOMP is now an ongoing sell-out production at New York’s Orpheum Theatre and a permanent London company. The show has won numerous awards and sell-out engagements around the world and is celebrated for its accessibility to all ages and walks of life.
STOMP has had a huge impact to over 24 million people in over 50 countries through their 26 years of performing, and those of you lucky people who live in Vancouver should not sit out on this opportunity to hear what everyone is talking about!
The four shows will be January 13 at 8 p.m., January 14 at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m., and January 15 at 3 p.m.! People! Get on it! Get those tickets!
